Climate Change:Its Fearful Impact and What the World Needs to Do
Climate Change: A Comprehensive Discussion
Among the many problems the environment is facing today, climate change has become the foremost issue. Living in a country where an average of 20 typhoons/storms visit in a year, many have observed that the typhoons have become fierce and more devastating as compared to several years ago. Take for example Typhoon Yolanda or Typhoon Haiyan in English which struck Southeast Asia most especially the Philippines in November 2013. It was one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded. It affected over 14 million people with deaths and damage to infrastructure. Studies indicate that warming ocean temperatures due to climate change contributed to its increased intensity and rainfall.
One problem brought about by climate change is global warming. Global Warming has affected the Earth through:
- Rising temperature - It is hot everywhere. Temperatures have reached unusual levels,
- Extreme weather events - Now we know of super typhoons and killer earthquakes, and
- Disruption of ecosystems - Deserts are expanding, icebergs are melting, growing list of endangered species due to loss of natural habitats.
- Rising of sea levels - seas are higher
- Extreme weather events like El Nino and La Nina
- Loss of biodiversity - many species of animals and plants are endangered or have already become extinct meaning cannot be seen anymore, only to be seen in pictures and in books
- Shifts in the ecosystem - farmers have a hard time adjusting to the weather because traditional seasons have shifted, the rains have not come when they are supposed to come
- Risks on human health - diseases brought about by the changing habitat of animals e.g. Covid 19
- Food Security - many areas turn arid and dry, cannot produce enough sustenance for people resulting to scarcity of food and hunger
- Water Availability - water sources dry up due to rising temperatures
- Economic Stability - the economy is affected due to recurring weather disturbances, incomes are affected
- Rising Temperatures - can trigger health issues among people
- Quality of Freshwater Sources - rains may come or they may not, may affect availability of potable drinking water that may lead to scarcity
- By embracing sustainable practices - in simpler terms, choose habits that are more earth-friendly like going organic, banning single-use plastics and practicing CLAYGO
- Advocating for policy shifts - support government initiatives for the environment e.g. the Clean Air Act, use of solar power instead of fossil fuels like gasoline
- Fostering Global Cooperation - acknowledge that Climate Change is a major problem (because some people don't spread awareness, refusing to see the havoc brought about by Climate Change going on in the world at present)
